AMIT GILBOA

Amit Gilboa performs Middle Eastern percussion on the darbuka (Arabic drum), riq (Arabic tambourine), bendir (Arabic frame drum) and sagat (finger cymbals). Amit’s background includes over a decade of experience as a drummer and multiple private lessons under master percussionists Salah Hibi, Binyamin Olguncan and Hossam Ramzy. His articles on the history and musical signatures of Middle Eastern rhythms have appeared in magazines and websites both in Singapore and abroad.

Some of the public venues at which Amit has performed include WOMAD Singapore 2003 and 2004, six different appearances at the Esplanade (Opening Festival, Flipside 2004 and 2005, Lunchbox, Pesta Raya 2004 and National Day 2005), Singapore Turkey Friendship Association Gala Dinner 2003, 2004 and 2005, Singapore Fashion Festival 2004 and 2006, Holistic Living Festival 2003, 2004 and 2005, Standard Chartered 150th Anniversary, Campus Concerts at both the National University of Singapore and Republic Polytechnic and performances for the Asian Civilisations Museum, National Arts Council, Singapore Tourism Board, and the President of Singapore as well as the Ambassadors to Singapore of Egypt, Turkey and Israel. Amit’s international experience includes performances and workshops in Taiwan, Shanghai, Bangkok, Phuket, Malaysia, Hong Kong and Macau. Before Amit founded the Al-Bedouin Middle Eastern Music Ensemble in January of 2004, Singapore did not have a single musical group specializing in Middle Eastern music. Since the band's formation and under Amit's management and promotion, Al-Bedouin have performed for numerous high-profile arts events, including Esplanade for Desert Whispers, Lunchbox Concert and (as Bedouin Groove) Flipside Festival 2004, WOMAD Singapore 2004, NUS Campus Concert Series, Singapore Heritage Festival, Hadhramaut Cultural Festival and Asian Civilisations Museum: Ottoman Empire Exhibit Opening Gala

Amit has also been involved in many different education programs using percussion. He conducts music classes at Genesis Special School using drumming to engage children with special needs. He has conducted workshops for the Canadian School, Singapore Management University, French Association, Asian Civilisations Museum, Citibank and Shell Family Day, Holy Innocents High School and over 500 students at Nanyang Primary. Workshops for adults include team-building events for STB, IBM, HP, OCBC, NEC, M1, Bank of America, Sandoz and the People's Association. Amit was a trainer for SMU Convocation 2004 and 2005, combining Middle Eastern rhythms with Malay, Burmese and Brazilian rhythms. Amit conducts ongoing, regular classes in Middle Eastern percussion including finger cymbal classes for Middle Eastern dancers and Middle Eastern drumming classes for children and adults and is a co-teacher for the World Percussion Ensemble class at LASALLE-SIA

When we speak of Tierra, we speak of a homegrown Singapore band that plays instrumental World Music.

Tierra is a band made up of several members playing several ethnic instruments and sounds that bring the essence of the world together in a style that defines the band. 

Inheriting rhythms from all over the world such as Australia, Europe, Asia, Latin America, Africa and the Middle East, Tierra enthuses both indigenous sounds and the grooves of the present with ethnicity.  Tierra’s high-energy shows uplift audiences with their display of powerful, joyous and infectiously danceable music.

As the world becomes smaller and smaller and multiculturalism becomes imminent.  Tierra arise to bring people together from all origins to speak a common universal language that is Music.. Tierra uses ethnic forms of art and instrument with a new freshness that is authentic and compositions that are original.

Tierra Solida is the percussive section of Tierra the World Music band. Tierra Solida is a group of percussionist who will performs on drums and percussion purely on fusion sounds of the world. They are also considered as one of most versatile percussion groups available for Samba, African, Latin or Fusion.

Tierra Solida's high uplifting beats catches the attention of the people and for that fanfare of the Arrival of the Guest Of Honor or perhaps an opening session for an event, Tierra Solida almost always guarantee its results.
